Principals Message

North Fork staff are making progress in a number of areas. Our primary focus has been improving behavior and school climate, but we have other areas for work, too. Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS) is our main effort as a staff. Staff have been working on specific methods for assisting students with making good choices and treating others with respect. Each Monday, staff meet to train, plan, and take next-steps toward full implementation of PBIS.

Most students respond positively to positive reinforcements. However, a handful of students do not readily respond to positive supports. Statistically, this number is around five percent of a given population. A number of students and parents have shared with me their concerns that their children have experienced inappropriate treatment by other students. This is something we take seriously at North Fork.

We are working through PBIS to support students through positive supports. We are documenting those supports and contacts with students and parents. When students continue to misbehave, we will exhaust the positive supports and begin the process for suspensions, alternative placements, and possible expulsions. The process takes time, especially when it is being implemented for the first time, but you will begin to notice a difference soon. We hope that students and their families respond to our efforts. One way or another, our climate needs to improve.

We appreciate your patience as we transition to a more effective way to address behavior on campus.

Mr. Pierce
